Midsummer Ritual

Filed under: Book of Shadows,Pagan — by Joyful Girl @ 2:42 am

Tools:
A Golden Yellow Altar Cloth, Small Cloth Pouch of Summertime Herbs, Cauldron, 1c Fresh Spring Water, Red Sun God Candle, Green Earth Goddess Candle, Summer Blend Incense (Jasmine, Rose, Lotus, Wysteria, or combination).
Preparation: Sweep area moving in deosil manor. Set up Quarter Candles and any accessories
symbolizing the Elements of the Quarters. Decorate the alter with seasonal flowers, especially Sunflowers. Prepare your Pouch of Summertime Herbs, and as you make it, pour your troubles, pains, sorrows, illness, and regrets into it. Place the Cauldron in the center of your alter, the Red Sun candle to the right of it , the Green Goddess Candle to the left of it. Place the cup of Fresh Spring Water in front of the Goddess Candle. Take a shower or bath for purification. Sit quietly and meditate for a while, then ground and center. When ready, play some peaceful music for the ritual.

Cast the circle….Pick up your Wand, and with arms upraised, face South and say:

“I celebrate the Mid-of-Summer, held in honor of the Blazing Sun God.
All of Nature vibrates with the fertileness of the Goddess and of the God.
The Earth basks in the light and life of the Sun.
The ever turning Wheel of the Year has made the light ever stronger
And the light has kept growing longer, until today
The middle of the time of light, Litha, MidSummer’s Day, Summer Solstice.
From here, the light begins to fade, again,
Until once more the Wheel turns to the time of darkness, Yule, Winter Solstice.
Yet, for today, the Sun is high, the light is bright, the Earth is warm.
As the Sun God blazes above, may the fires of my rite flame below.”

Face the altar, put down your wand, and light the Green Goddess Candle to the left of your cauldron, saying:

“Oh, Mother of Nature, She that brings the meadow to bloom,
Green Forest Mother, from lakes and streams your children spring forth.
Blessed Lady of the stars and the Moon,
Fruitful Womb of which I honor, and ask of Thee, Thy Blessings.
Light the Red Sun God Candle to the right of your cauldron, saying:
“Oh, Father of all things, He that plants the seed and nurtures Life.
God of Fertility and Fruitfulness, from hill and forest your children emerge.
Blessed Lord of the blazing Sun,
Potent Consort of which I honor, and of Thee, Thy Blessings.”
Take the Herb Pouch and hold above your head, saying:
“By thy power, oh sacred herbs, may the Lord of the Sun
Burn away the hurtful, the troublesome, and the painful,
Leaving me purified through His warmth and Light.”

Hold the pouch over your main Altar Candle to take flame. While it is burning, drop it in the cauldron, saying: Great Goddess and Great God, from Thee all powers flow forth.
The Two that are One, Great Spirit of All-That-Is,
By Thy powers, and the powers of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth,
By Thy powers, and the powers of the Sun, Moon, and Stars,
I banish these negatives from my life.”

Visualize the negatives burning away to nothingness. When all that is left is ashes, douse the ashes with the cup of Fresh Spring Water, feel as if the water were being poured over you and your negatives washed away. Air dry by dancing and running your hands up and down your arms, body, and legs. Don’t forget your head, lay it back and shake running your fingers through your hair. When done, face altar, wave hand over the cauldron and say:
“As the Phoenix rises from the ashes, so let this water be pure and new.
Mother Goddess, bless this water so that it may bless and renew me.
Father God, may your rays of the MidSummer Sun bless and nourish me.
Two that are One, may your blessings sustain me as I journey, anew.”

Pass your cupped hands over the cauldron, pausing briefly each time to “pour” in wishes for health, prosperity, and good fortune to be part of your life. Dip the forefinger of your right hand into the cauldron water, and trace a pentagram on your forehead, saying:

“Let my mind be open to the truth.”
Anoint your lips saying:
“Let my lips always speak the truth.”
Anoint your heart area, saying:
“Let my heart seek the ways of the Goddess, now and always.”
Anoint the centers of your palms, saying:
“Let my hands be gifted to work in m’jyk-l ways.”
Anoint the soles of your feet, saying:
“Let my feet ever walk upon the sacred paths!”

Now is the time for meditation and any spellworkings. MidSummer spellworkings include: prosperity, fertility, and plentiful harvests. Finish by having the Cakes and Ale Ceremony and releasing the circle. Clean up. You are done.

Goddess Worship Vs. Patriarchical Religon, Pagan Radio, July Astrology

Filed under: astrology,Creativity/Fun,News and Culture,Pagan,Spirituality — by Joyful Girl @ 2:32 am

Outdated, “neander-thoughts” about religion.  Interesting stand on goddess worship.

Pagan radio stations online through Witchvox.

July Astrology Forecast:

For Everybody ~ Amidst tremendous impatience and intense but unrealistic desires, we must address immediate challenges and make wise, far-sighted decisions.  We have room to maneuver and we sense the support of circumstances.  The right thing to do is consolidate your position and prepare to meet challenges you know or sense very strongly are on the way.  The mistake would be to overreach.  Don’t use your previous resources to pursue a new and unrealistic goal. Whatever choices you make will have lasting and far reaching consequences.

Sign by Sign Astrology Forecast for July 2007

ARIES ~ You are feeling the need for personal independence and self-expression. Or maybe you just need to assert yourself in your present situation in order to make it more comfortable for you.  But take care.  There is only so much flexibility in this situation.  Continued stability and security will depend on your patience and forbearance.  You must adapt your deeply felt, powerfully charged personal ideals and your urge for self-expression.  If you don’t bend a little, you risk a major upset.  You could tip over the proverbial apple cart.

TAURUS ~ You are feeling the tug of your hopes and ambitions and the pull of your personal ideals intensely about now.  You are also feeling blocked and impatient because of your relative powerlessness.  My advice is to work patiently through the details of the complex and demanding situation in which you find yourself.  Observe changes in your neighborhood and community, also.  Some of these changes will not be well thought-out.  They will require foresight and careful responses on your part.  Meanwhile, take comfort from positive developments in long-term financial matters.

GEMINI ~ You are sensitive to the numerous concerns expressed by others, but like others, you aren’t yet in a position to change anything.  It is true that opposition forces are weaker.  But there is too much confusion for effective action.  There is also risk of overreaching or premature action.  The foundation you have worked so hard to create can only take so much weight.  Let those in charge do what they can.  Meanwhile, you would benefit by working through some tricky philosophical and spiritual issues.  Your personal position is secure.

CANCER ~ Others will be influenced naturally and spontaneously by your response to events.  You must rise above your disappointments or risk spreading gloom and dissatisfaction.  Your personal bonds with others in the community are especially lively and productive right now.  You can use this influence to make people see beyond their own self-interest and work cooperatively.  Cooperation is a necessity if everyone is to come out of this OK.  You’ll have to be even more diplomatic and sensitive to the feelings of others than usual.  Impatience and irritability are running high.

LEO ~ Leo has been under a tiring, inhibiting planetary influence for a couple of years.  Fortunately, this influence will leave Leo early in September.  You will then experience an immediate boost in mood, attitude and energy levels.  The first half of July will offer a preview of this new condition.  Don’t be discouraged when the preview ends and things bog down again in late July.  In September, a new, refurbished Leo will arrive on the scene to stay, minus lots of old baggage and full of new life and energy.

VIRGO ~ Your input will be important.  People, including some powerful and highly motivated people, will depend on your input.  However, it could be hard to express some of your more innovative, intuitive ideas, especially since some of your thoughts will involve rebellion against the system.  Your ideas will be quite influential in any case.  You might be surprised at what people do or say on the basis of your advice.  Overall, you are under very supportive and protective influences. If you keep work and partnership affairs under control, you’ll do quite well.

LIBRA ~ This month, the challenges will not be in any of the financial, or economic, areas of your life.  (Although, if you allow it, professional and work issues could spill over, upsetting the rest of your affairs.)  The challenges will be kind of spiritual, philosophical and generally abstract.  They will involve relationship and emotional issues, which are so important to Librans. Even relationship matters that seem to go well might conceal knotty problems for later resolution.  Your solution of these intellectual and emotional issues will eventually have important, concrete benefits.

SCORPIO ~ You are still being powerfully affected by a lot of things over which you have little or no control.  It seems that your own commitments and loyalties, especially in partnership and professional areas, are helping contribute to the impasse.  The wise, selective use of financial resources can supplement your personal capacity while you work toward a resolution of some stubborn issues.  You are certainly coping very well.  However, coping well is not at all the same thing as prospering.  Take advantage of upcoming changes to further lighten your load.

SAGITTARIUS ~ There is nothing motivating you strongly in one direction or another.  Also, a lot of tricky issues are keeping you from decisive action.  Normally thoughtful people, Sagittarians are now overly thoughtful people, preoccupied by many complicated and subtle questions.  This lengthy standstill will end later this year.  When it’s over you will have changed your mind about many things.  But the *way* you think about things is going to change also.  Reason and evidence won’t be enough to convince you anymore.  You will take imponderables–feelings, conscience, and intuition–much more seriously.

CAPRICORN ~ The options are rattling around out there, but none of them measure up to your expectations, yet.  You might have to disappoint a lot of eager people.  If you said yes now, you know things wouldn’t work out anyway.  It’s partly a question of keeping finances within bounds.  But you are also troubled by a lot of subtle philosophical issues.  To be honest, it would probably be best for all concerned if you held off completely on some things until late summer.  New and more promising conditions will emerge then.

AQUARIUS ~ Relations with those close to you are strained.  Even casual friendships seem to have chilled somewhat.  Present tensions are part of a planetary renovation of your social life that will soon be completed. Relationships are being put on a sounder footing.   When this seeming chill has passed, your relationships overall will be more flexible and sustainable than before.  These new arrangement will work better for years to come. Shakeups in relationships can be upsetting, but you should remain confident.  The planets have placed a protective mantle over your affairs.

PISCES ~ There is a lot riding on your decisions.  Your choices are influencing the lives of those around you.  This is partly because you have special insight into what’s happening.  But it’s also because your understanding of underlying realities is very clear.   Many in your life don’t quite understand where you are coming from or what your needs are anymore.  You should make a special effort to explain your thoughts. You’ll have to break free of some old ties or at least adjust the terms in accordance with recent insights.

Cooking By Moonlight

Filed under: Book of Shadows,Pagan — by Joyful Girl @ 2:25 am

Foods for Autumn Moons

As the harvest is gathered and the earth’s bounty celebrated, the moon rises golden and heavy. Birds mark the sky in their arrow-shaped instinct. Frost is around the corner, the dark time is coming. But not today. Today the Goddess breathes her burnished breath upon the land, spinning straw into gold. This is the Crone’s alchemy, her last turn at beauty etched in wisdom, bittersweet. It is a time for noticing the small things, such as the creatures preparing for the colder nights ahead, it is a time of sleep and prophesy, it is a time for gathering – gathering strength, wisdom, patience, and substenance.

Foods now become strengthening, boosting the immune system with earthy root vegetables and harvest flavours, restorative spices and herbs. Slow-cooked stews and lemon-roasted chicken nurture the spirit and support the body. Freashly baked breads, and muffins laced with cinnamon fill the house with the fragrance of the harvest. The Goddess’ favored apples abound in an array of colours and textures, tempting us into the kitchen to conjure up batters for breads, cakes, and pies, comfort foods to face the shortening daylight.

The kitchen truely becomes the soul and centre of the home during this wistful season, as Hestia, Goddess of the hearth, moves quietly into our hearts. She teaches us patience and the art of centering, the art of being, and knowing. It is a time to go within and cultivate our intuition, a time to reflect upon our connection to our ancestors, a time to collect a new stack of books and put the tea kettle on. It’s important to feed the imagination as well as the body.

Reality is creeping in…

“Other people may be there to help us, teach us, guide us along our path, but the lesson to be learned is always ours.” ~ Unknown

Wow…two days into MSW program and I’m already wondering how I am ever going to get through the next two years in one piece!  Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited and feel very positive that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.   But now I have a better sense of the work-load that is expected and I get the feeling that there are going to be periods of time in the semester when I am not going to be very easy to be around…

There is so much to learn, read and do….in a way, I can see these two years flying by.   I guess I was a little naive prior to starting school, in my thinking that this program will not be too intense.  I had wavered for a while before applying to the MSW program, not quite sure if I wanted to pursue the pure academic route by getting a Master’s in Sociology or going with a program that offered more clinical, hands on experiences such as the Master’s in Social Work.   I chose to go the MSW route figuring this would be the more marketable (and flexible) degree to have in the end.  I also had this notion that the course work would not be as heavy as the Sociology graduate level.  I sure was mistaken!

One thing that especially intimidates me right now is the whole idea of technical writing.  I’ve always been comfortable with the writing and research process, but at this level, all bets are off.  Papers have to be written in APA style, and the professors seem really strict about this.   I bought an APA Publication Manual, as everyone and their brother strongly suggested…and I know I have my work cut out for me big time.

But the challenge is invigorating.  I feel so at home in the university culture.  This is a very exciting and life-changing time….I look forward to this journey and am grateful to be able to take it.

Just stuff

“When you feed that need, it opens a door. Your best thoughts, your best ideas, come through relaxation and play.”  ~ Roberta Goheen

I survived this past week of orientation overload!   At the beginning of the week, I had a two day orientation at the agency I will be doing my 1st  year of field placement.   I have to say, the group at this agency is terrific, I love the energy from these folks.  I feel quite positive about being there.

Then Thursday and Friday were the two day orientations for the new students in the MSW program at school.  That was a bit more grueling.  Lots of logistical stuff to sort through….I met some fellow students and my advisor, went to a few introductory meetings and had some computer and writing refresher seminars.    I am really looking forward to school though, I feel so at home when I am there.   This is my last weekend of “freedom” …classes start on Monday.

Its a kind of gloomy day today, cool and cloudy.  I’ve been watching re-runs of “Beverly Hills, 90210”, lingering over my coffee and just hanging out.   I feel the need to be very low-key this weekend….I know it will be a while before I enjoy this little luxury again.

Thumbs down to Waldenbooks

Filed under: News and Culture — by Joyful Girl @ 9:26 pm

“Imagine books and music and movies being filtered and homogenized. Certified. Approved for consumption. People will be happy to give up most of their culture for the assurance that the tiny bit that comes through is safe and clean. White noise.” ~ Chuck Palahniuk

Ugh–this is utter bullshit.  A Mississippi Waldenbooks store recently pulled all of the books off the shelves in their relationship/adult section because some ultra conservative nut job was offended by the title and cover of The Good Sex Bible.   I am flaberghasted, not only by the corporate decision to react so dramatically but also because I am trying to do a search on Amazon.com for this book and it simply does not appear to exist!  It is also very difficult to find any information about this book on google.  I came across a couple of websites that state the book was to be released in 2005, and yet there are virtually no real links to find out more about this book.   Perhaps a glitch, but then again, perhaps not.  I am quite curious to know what the deal is.

I never even heard of this book before today and honestly wouldnt be interested in reading it based on its title alone.  But for some bible thumping radical woman in Mississippi, the title alone was enough to raise such a ruckus that every book in the relationship section of Waldenbooks gets pulled and the store manager has had to face the threat of arrest as well- though I am not clear on what charges.

All this makes me feel very sad indeed.   Censorship continues to creep into our society. I wonder how many realize that the religious fanatics in our own country pose more of a threat to us than radcial religious-terrorists abroad do.

Back to the business of writing

Filed under: Life — by Joyful Girl @ 9:13 pm

Writing is the only socially acceptable form of schizophrenia. – E. L. Doctorow

Its been a whirlwind summer…hard to believe its already winding down.  I’ve been consumed with a couple of projects, mainly the business of updating and renting out the apartment above my parent’s.   Earlier this year, my parent’s (who are getting up in age) transferred ownership of their duplex home to my brother and I.   This summer was the first time in over 20 years a new tenant would be needed for the upper flat.   So, there has been a good deal of updating and repair to be done on the apartment, as well as the somewhat arduous process of screening for tenants.  I never really wanted to be a landlord, but it has become too much for parent’s to deal with on their own.   Naturally, my brother always finds a way to avoid getting involved in family affairs that require him to do actual work, so basicially my husband and I have been running the show.       Needless to say, it has been a trying project at times.   Thankfully, the new tenant moves in in a couple weeks and I hope things run fairly smoothly…keeping fingers crossed.

I’ve also been busy with the business of getting ready to start graduate school on the 28th.   For the last couple of weeks, I have been in the process of interviewing and finding the proper placement for my field work/internship.   I am going to be at a large local agency that services developmentally disabled individuals of all ages.  The program I will be involved most in for this internship is one which works with young adults who are in need of transitioning from the role of high school level student to college.  Its a day program held on actual college campuses in the community and I will work as a social work intern assisting with developement of life skills, interpersonal issues and providing one on one when needed.  It is a big switch from the population I have been working with over the last ten years, the elderly.   I am glad for the opportunity though, because I want my field placements to help to stretch my boundaries and offer new experiences and chances to develop various new skills.  I am a little intimidated, but excited nonetheless.

So, between the apartment and school, I have been MIA for the most part on here.  I want to return to my blogging adventures, and in fact, I am going to post a few back dated entries from items sitting in draft for the last couple weeks.

Hope the summer of 2006 has been good to you…

To live forever?

Filed under: aging — by Joyful Girl @ 9:08 pm

“Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen”  ~Mark Twain

I am not by any means a biblical scholar, but I do recall in some of the stories of the Old Testament, it had been mentioned that the average life span of persons in those days well exceeded what we now accept as “old age”.   According to this article, http://www.biblestudy.org/basicart/longpatr.html,  Noah himself lived well past the age of 900 years old.  900 years old???!!!   I can’t even fathom what it would be like to live to such an age!

Yet some scientists today believe that the human lifespan can and will be able to be extended..perhaps by decades.   Personally, I feel a bit disturbed by the notion that through genetic/technological interventions,  one’s life span can be indefinately increased. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12916099/print/1/displaymode/1098/  It sounds like something out of a science fiction novel…and certainly seems to leave the door open for potentially unintended circumstances.   Its bad enough we live in a society that reveres its youth and typically “gives up” on its aged members.  What implications would living longer and longer have on us sociologically?  How would this impact the health care system?  Sounds awfully daunting to me, but maybe I am just a pessimist.

Would you want to live into your 100’s…and maybe even well beyond?   If your body and mind would remain well-preserved , would you welcome this as a positive scientific discovery and exciting opportunity?

Rain Magick

Filed under: Book of Shadows,Creativity/Fun,Pagan,Spirituality — by Joyful Girl @ 2:23 am

terry-redlin-stormy-weather.jpg

When Witches Gather Rain

Witches have always known the special meaning of nature’s acts. They are
warnings, blessings and magickal guides to the living world around us. Rain
is a special gift from the sky and its power should be used wisely.

Try never to shelter yourself from it’s fall, but rather accept the rain as
we should accept life with all its trials and blessings.

*Rain while the sun shines is a healing rain. Catch and store it in blue
glass. Use the water for all manner of healing magick. Place in the bath for
an all over body cleaning.

*The blessing of Fairies is upon anyone who catches rain in a silver spoon
after the rain has bounced off a flat stone. Place some of this water on any
frequently lost object (keys is a good choice).

*Place midnight rain of a New Moon on the third eye to bring visions and to
see future events.

*The first rain gathered in May is symbolic of May dew and holds much power.
It is used when very special favours are needed. Do not gather this rain in
metal container or it’s power will be lost. Glass would be better.

*When rain runs off a gravestone gather carefully and use with caution.

*Rain gathered during a thunderstorm holds much energy and can be used to
enhance spells and potions. But be aware that the energy does not last long
and the spell should be completed before three days and nights have passed
or the rainwater will be of little use.

*House plants enjoy the outdoor rain, this cleanses their leaves and helps
to purify the indoor air when they are brought back home. This is especially
good to do when you are in need of a clear mind and strong thoughts

*Jewelry, charms and other objects can be purified by standing in the rain,
facing west and tossing the object into the air 3 times, catching it in your
hands each time.

The sound of the rain carries the voices of the water spirits. Listen to the
rain and enjoy the gifts of the undines. They will speak to you of Love, and
Friends.

The wise also realize that rain is just one aspect of Nature. We should look
to the Wind, Trees, Lightning, Fire, Stones, and other forms of Nature’s
expression for clues to the magick of the world.
